Lois Quote of the Day
gailsimone:
Lois Lane: Everyday I write the book. The book of what it’s like to be married to him. The kindness. The strength. The sense of decency that radiates off him so intensely, it’s almost visible. I want the world to know about him — how he looks when he’s sleeping, how he loves blueberry pancakes, but only if the berries are fresh, not frozen..and how, sometimes,...

A First Look at the Ray - aka another comic to buy →
Here is the first look at The Ray 4-issue mini starting in December. I do believe I’ll be adding this to the heap.

I’m very nervous. This is another issue without Chiang on art. His work, I think, has been hugely important to this book’s success. I hope there is not a team change on this book coming (which could explain why there is a delay on the trade announcement.)

Animal Man #3 - Crazy as all out
So up to this point, I think I’ve been fairly clear about how I feel about Lemire and Foreman’s Animal Man. It happens to be probably my favourite of the New52, along with Wonder Woman and Swamp Thing. Well, for #3, Lemire and Foreman brought their game faces. And by faces, I mean creepy things with no faces at all.
<SPOILERS—Sorry, but the reveal in this issue is crucial, so if...

Goodbye Action Comics (#3)
Well I gave it my best shot.
I think I’m going to keep my review of Action Comics #3 short, mainly because I don’t want to waste any more time on this book.
Plot-wise, Sneak Peak at Astro City on Krypton (with scary Krypto), Clark gets the shake-down by the cops, his landlord thinks he might be Superman, Metropolis doesn’t like Superman saving cats from tree, talking machines,...

Justice League Dark #2
We’ve seen in general that DC’s new52 is keeping pace with itself - the good books stay good, the mediocre books stay mediocre, and the terrible books stay terrible. While I’ve heard Stormwatch got way better, most quality jumps stayed fairly small. (I’m still not going to pick it up though.) One of the books that got marginally better with its sophomore issue was Justice...
Two-week lapse
Sorry for the lack of reviews in the last 2 weeks - I’ve had computer troubles.
Expect the (late) review of Justice League Dark #2, Animal Man #3, Swamp Thing #3 and (ugh) Action Comics #3 before Wednesday Morning.
Cheers,
WK

Wonder Woman #2 - Another Hit
Last month, I spoke very highly of Wonder Woman #1, finding it to be a high action, high intrigue book with amazing visuals. The second issue is no less a success.
The plot for this issue is pretty simple Diana, Zola, and Hermes head to Paradise Island, where in a bit of exposition we get a taste of WW origin, as well as a good fight spread between Amazon Aleka and Diana. After this, Stryfe,...

Shade #1
James Robinson’s Starman series is in my top five favourite series. It may be my favourite. I own the omnibus collections and read them often. Jack Knight, Shade, Grundy, Mikaal, Ted Knight and the O’Dares are just great characters you can return to read again and again. Why am I saying all of this? Because the series that ended 10 years ago is finally back in some measure by giving...

Batwoman #2
Could #2 be as good as the long-awaited #1?
Yes. Yes it can.
Batwoman #2 hits the ground running with Kate talking to Bette about possibly joining Batman Inc, though Kate isn’t sure if is awesome or terrible (a little meta there, maybe). This is followed by our friends at the DEO getting deeper into the case by getting Kate’s date Detective Sawyer further on the trail of Batwoman in...

Demon Knights #2
Demon Knights #1 was a funny, slightly-horrifying and action-packed comic that set a tone similar to my days playing Dungeons and Dragons. If anything, that tone has been amped up to another level. I don’t know how good the actual D&D comic is, but this could replace it!
Plot Summary: Team fights dinosaurs in tavern. Team talks to villagers/each other and jokes arise. People get pissed...

Part 1: Rebooting the Justice League
Part 2: Rebooting the Legion of Doom
So for the final installment of my “New DC” reboots, I thought I’d take a look at Batman and friends. In some ways these are probably the least drastic of my redesigns (Batman’s been handled better than a lot…

Origin: In the universe there is nothing like the entity that has come to be known as Darkseid. A planet teeming with life, but all of it bound to a single mind, a single will. There is only Darkseid and all is Darkseid. And this vast singular mind is consumed with one thing, hate towards…

What are heroes without villains? To follow up with my Rebooting the Justice League post, where I treated those characters to a more extreme reboot than DC’s “New 52,” I thought it would be fun to take a look at a redesigned villain team to oppose my redesigned Justice League:

Action Comics #2 - Kind of a Disappointment
As an idea, Superman is an archetypal hero of grand proportions - a Messiah-like character whose intentions towards his adoptive planet have always been for its benefit. Practically speaking, however, we instinctively know that archetype so well within the collective Zeitgeist of our age that only when that archetype is taken to its extreme, either in the definition of the archetype or throwing...

Swamp Thing #2 - It Gets Even Better
Originally, I was going to say that Animal Man #2 was the greatest #2 I had ever read, similar to its #1 status.
But then I read Swamp Thing #2 and it took that title in one fell swoop.
Snyder (story), Paquette (pencils & inks), and Fairbairn (colours) return for issue 2, leading up from the #1 cliffhanger of Holland meeting Swamp Thing face to face. Surprise and spoiler alert: not The Swamp...

Animal Man #2
Now that #1 month is over (sort of - there mini-series’ to attend to now), now its time to see if the #2s are as good as their predecessors. In the case of this week’s 3 #2’s, it is certainly true. So to start off, let’s talk about Animal Man #2.
Sweet merciful crap, I love this comic book.
First, a summary. After Maxine’s uh…new pets… show up, Buddy...

So, following the immense popularity of my 5 Essential Character Redesigns post, I decided to take a more thorough stab at revamping DC Comic’s Justice League. I’ve already mentioned before that I think their current “New 52” reboot, aimed at gaining new readers, is terribly ineffective,…

DC's New 52, 1 month later.
September has now come and gone, and with it 52 new titles from DC Comics, the catalyst to my buying singles of superhero comics again in life. Here are some of my unsolicited thoughts on the hubub that has gone down around this relaunch and whether it was successful in its intentions. At the end, I’ll list off my pull list for October onwards.
If all DC wanted to do was sell more comics,...

Justice League Dark #1
Another late one, and again, not for the lack of liking it. Puppies, man. I tell ya.
Enough of that - time for a Justice League iteration that piques MY interest. Justice League DARK. As my only book for the last week of the New 52 #1s, and as the book with the most magic-based characters barring Demon Knights, I was excited to read this book.
And it is weird as shit. There is little other way...

Wonder Woman #1
So, due to a new puppy in the house, this review is late. Please don’t take that as indicative of how I felt about this book, because I think this book has tied itself for first for me in the New 52.
This book is amazing.
Before I gush about this book, let me go through what I know about Wonder Woman pre-this issue. I’ve read nothing. I know her name is Diana and she’s from an...

Batman #1 was fantastic. The art was sharp and expressive, and the writing was both clever and witty. It’s easily among my favorites of the new 52. Seriously. It’s an excellent comic book. As a guy who misses Dick in the role of Batman ‘cuz the guy actually had a bit of fun with it, this speaks to…

Supergirl #1
This week, we only see two New52’s for me - Supergirl and Wonder Woman - as well as Fables #109; a nice and easy week. Let’s get started.
As usual, here’s what I know about Supergirl: she is Superman’s cousin. That is all. I heard the writers, Michael Green and Mike Johnston, were good. They did Superman/Batman for awhile, as well as some Smallville episodes. Mahmoud Asrar...

Batwoman #1
I told myself I wasn’t going to get any Batbooks - too much of a temptation to go all in, especially with a buddy that buys anything and everything related to Gotham and/or the Bat Family. I’ve seen darkness, and his name is Bruce Wayne.
But I couldn’t help myself! This Batwoman book kept popping up with gorgeous preview art and art skills from some guy people just loved. I had...

Grifter #1
So going into this one, I know this much about Grifter: He was in a comic called W.I.L.D.C.A.T.S (or something) that was also a cartoon that I might have seen once. I have no idea what kind of powers he was, other than wearing a sheet on his face that doesn’t blow all the other place while fighting. With that foundation, here goes.
Anyone seen LOST? That will make things easier. This book...

Next on my New52 list is Demon Knights, written by Paul Cornell with pencils by Diogenes Neves, inks by Oclair Albert, and colours by Marcelo Maiolo.

Stormwatch #1 - The Latest of Reviews
I’m quickly realizing that I’m going to write reviews on time for books I like. Here’s my review for the last of my week #2 pick-ups, Stormwatch.
Let me start off by saying I know absolutely nothing about Stormwatch or Wildstorm comics, for that matter. From the news vine, I know that there are gay superheroes in it and that it is some kind “gritty, more realistic” view of a superhero team. With...

Action Comics #1 - Grant Morrison, writer, Rags Morales, penciller, Rick Bryant on inks and Brad Anderson on colours
There’s a lot of hype around this series and what Grant Morrison is doing with it. To start, I have to lay this out on the table: I have only ever read two Morrison issues - Animal #1 (vol. 1) and New X-Men Annual 2001. The Animal Man issue I...

Swamp Thing #1 - A Really Cool Book
Like Animal Man, I know little to nothing about Swamp Thing, other than Alan Moore apparently wrote an awesome Swamp Thing that everyone loves and it was a 90s cartoon I watched when I was a young lad, including playing with some cool toys. That being said, I did read the final issue of Brightest Day, that explained a lot about the character, so I’m not going into this a fresh as I could.

Animal Man #1 - The Greatest #1 I have ever read.
Ok, so we’ve moved past Justice League and have what I’m going to call the meat of the New 52 - the actual titles. I’ll be reviewing each one individually - some longer, some shorter, depending on how much I like them, essentially. Let’s start with my favourite: Animal Man.
Let’s start with what I know about Animal Man. I’ve read the first issue of...

Justice League #1 and Flashpoint #5
So I got my hands on Flashpoint #5 - and Justice League #1. Here are my thoughts:
Flashpoint 1 to 5 - Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert
Due to having starkly limited income for books this summer, I only bought Flashpoint’s main event book, all 5 issues. I figured it would be a good read and way to re-introduce myself to characters. Before you say anything, I mean re-introduce myself to the core...

Due to needing sleep badly and a host of other responsibilities, I did not go out last night to get the heralds of DC’s New 52 - I’m thinking I’m going to be waiting until Sunday/Monday to go after those bad boys. Since I’m just some guy, I don’t feel the need to be totally on top of these reviews yet. Bad Attitude? Maybe. We’ll see.

My name is Will Kinchlea and I love DC. More accurately, I want to love DC in a right and proper fashion, by buying comics in their original, periodical form.
See, I grew up with DC Comics around me all the time. My parents both loved comics for a good amount of time, and while my mother’s X-men books and classic reprints were entertaining, it was my father’s DC titles that kept my...
